“Histories of M”

These images are concerned with two separate, yet intersecting, lines of visual inquiry that focus on the representation of masculinity: the historical and geographic connections between specific formations and expressions of “maleness,” and the visual gap between the gender-ambiguous physicality of ancient Asian “bodies” and more recent constructions of “masculine” traits that claim their space through oppression, submission, anxiety, and self-care. Who were these ancient transformers, and how are they related to contemporary performances of gender? Isabel Seliger
